Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge
The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge is a new series to the UK for 2010. It is a series of races rather than a championship, so at the end of the year, there is no 'champion', but a 'Driver of the Year'.
Divided into two classes, the eligible cars are: Class 1 - 997 GT3 Cup cars and Class 2 - 996 GT3 Cup cars. To accommodate variations between the cars over the different model years, different minimum weights or relaxation of technical regulations apply, to provide a 'level playing field' for all competitors.
At the final round of the season - on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit - the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge runners join up with the Porsche Club Championship field to provide a grid of in excess of 40-cars. We also have a one-off race against leading Ferrari ‘Open’ runners at Castle Combe in August.
In 2010 the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge will feature a mix of stand-alone races and the combined races with the Club Championship at the Silverstone final round. It will once more provide the exciting racing the series has become renowned for. Porsche Cars GB will again be rewarding the outstanding driver of the season with the use of a Porsche Cayman S for next year.
Mike Johnson, last year's Porsche Open 'Driver of the Year' sampled a funded drive in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Rockingham earlier this year as his prize for being Driver of the Year in the Porsche Open in 2009. "It’s fantastic to have a run in the Carrera Cup," said Mike . "It was what we have been working towards all season and I can’t believe we have won it - I just can’t wait." This drive has been replaced by the use of a Porsche Cayman S for the 2010 winner.
