Speed Championship at MIRA
Wed, 18/08/2010 - 09:50 | by Steve Kevlin
The tenth round of the Porsche Club Speed Championship ran at the automotive research centre MIRA last Saturday, where very wet weather certainly tested both car and driver on this fast sprint circuit. Despite the high winds and standing water the venue still provided some very exciting competition over the day.
Three drivers entered Class P1 at MIRA with Karl Lupton struggling to put the power down on the very wet circuit in his supercharged 944. Although he had a spin in his second run Karl put in a first timed run of 68.50 seconds for third place. In his fifth appearance this season Pedro Moriyon (993) earned himself second place in P1 with a final, fastest time of 64.79 seconds. In spite of the wet conditions Simon Wilson (slick-shod supercharged 924) created a relatively large margin of 3.39 seconds over Pedro’s time and finished the day as class winner and fastest championship Porsche with a time of 61.40 seconds. The smooth driving style of John Biddulph (3.2 Carrera) showed through in the close and consistent times he created over the day to earn third place in Class P2 with a fastest time of 69.14 seconds. It was a close competition for first and second place in P2 between Jeff Archer (3.2 litre 911) and Geraint Evans (3.2 Carrera) with Geraint eventually taking third place with a fastest time of 63.13 seconds. Seemingly able to ignore the worsening weather, Jeff Archer managed to whittle his times down over the day to a very quick 62.19 seconds in his final, fastest run, almost a full second quicker than Geraint, for the P2 class win.
Class P3 saw five drivers at MIRA with David Hilton’s (3.0 litre 911) first timed run earning him third place trophy in 65.28 seconds. As so often this season, it was very close in P3 for the first and second spot with Ian Wadsworth (3.0 litre 911) putting in a series of ever quicker times over the day. Despite a deluge of rain before the afternoon timed runs Ian still managed to whittle his times down to a final run time of 62.08 seconds for second place. In series of disciplined drives Tim Barber (911SC) once again this season earned himself the P3 class win and maximum points after finishing with a fastest time of 61.67 seconds, 0.41 of a second ahead of Ian. It was a good turnout for MIRA for Class P4 with six drivers battling it out. Jonathan Thompson’s (944) good form in the sprint rounds was apparent again at MIRA where he won third place in 66.27 seconds. Justin Mather’s 924 engine woes seem to have been cured as he put in some very assured runs in the afternoon for second place in 65.87 seconds just 0.87 seconds behind Graham Rose. Graham (924S) cut nearly five seconds off his first practice run to finish with a fastest time of 65.00 seconds for the P4 class win.
