Prescott 26th September 2009
Mon, 22/03/2010 - 16:06 | by administrator
Saturday 26th September saw the Porsche Club GB Speed Championship complete the final round of the season at Prescott hill climb in Gloucestershire. The day was blessed with a good turnout and great weather, although a number of ‘offs’ (both Porsches and non-Porsches) meant that the final run was quite late in the day. These delays left the PCGB drivers with a much cooler and consequently less adhesive track surface and this was reflected in the final times.
Representing Class P1 at Prescott and driving his supercharged 944 Karl Lupton whittled down his times to produce a fastest finish of 50.47 seconds and a final points tally of 93.37 for second overall place in P1. The 2009 class winner for P1 was Robert Lancaster-Gaye who finished his season with 100.70 points.
Five drivers entered Class P2 at Prescott with this years P2 class winner Geraint Evans (3.2 911) also taking home third place trophy at Prescott with a fastest time of 49.87 seconds. Geraint’s trophy at Prescott and his strong performances this year, particularly at Goodwood and Shelsley Walsh earned him a final point tally of 155.70. Despite mechanical problems that put them out of the final run Derek and Will Thomas still did enough to win second and first place in P2 at Prescott. Driving their shared 911 3.2 Supersport Derek completed one timed run in an impressive 49.27 seconds while fastest Porsche on the day and new class record went to Will for a superb finish in 48.65 seconds.
It was a full turnout of registered drivers for Class P3 with the final points positions only decided in the very last run of the season. It has been an astonishingly close competition all season and the round at Prescott was no exception with the fastest four drivers all finishing within one second of each other. David Strange (2.5 911S) completed his fastest run in 50.99 for third place while a close fought battle went on for second and first place between Ian Wadsworth (911 Carrera 3.0) and David Hilton (911 E 3.0). Just 0.16 second separated Ian in second place with 50.31 seconds with David taking class honours with 50.15 seconds. However, in terms of overall point position, David Hilton’s win at Prescott was not enough to unseat Ian as 2009 Class P3 winner. In the end, the 2008 season champion came third overall with 161.51 points while Ian Wadsworth’s impressively consistent season earned him second place overall in the championship with 162.25 points.
It was a strong entry for Class P4 with seven drivers at Prescott including Andrew Jeff (944 2.5) who had his fifth championship appearance this season to win third place in 55.85 seconds. Stuart Maclean has also had five appearances this season and has been driving brilliantly in the hill climbs. Stuart finished in second place at Prescott with a fastest time of 54.91 seconds. Creating a margin of 2.60 seconds left Graham Rose (924S) with an emphatic win at Prescott and a 52.31 second finish for maximum points to add to his championship winning total of 164.00.
Congratulations to Graham Rose, who we can now officially declare 2009 Porsche Club Speed Champion. It has been an almost faultless performance from Graham this season with a one hundred percent turnout record and a great demonstration of experience, skill and commitment for a well deserved Championship victory.
