Goodwood Sprint August 2010
Fri, 13/08/2010 - 09:02 | by Steve Kevlin
Fifteen drivers attended the ninth round of the Porsche Club Speed Championship at the high speed, 2.38 mile Goodwood circuit last weekend. The day ran under mostly dry conditions with a little light rain in the afternoon but not enough to affect the results too much.
Five drivers entered Class P4 with Donald Peach (924) just edging ahead of Justin Mather in their shared car to clinch third place. Despite being eventually knocked out of the competition because of engine troubles Donald still managed a trophy winning time of 112.14 seconds in his first and only timed run. Although still a relative newcomer to the Speed championship Jonathan Thompson (944) is consistently putting in some fine performances with a 3.85 second margin over Donald for second place in 108.29 seconds. Graham Rose (924S) has proved to be almost unbeatable this season with his last eight appearances earning him a first place trophy and Goodwood was no exception. Graham’s fastest time for the class win at Goodwood was 104.63 seconds. Three drivers entered Class P3 with David Chivers’ (3.0 litre 911) first timed run putting him in third place in 106.09 seconds. David Hilton (3.0 litre 911) bettered David Chivers’ time by 1.33 seconds to secure second place in 104.76 seconds. Tim Barber (911SC) is clearly enjoying the way his car is now set up as his performance this season has been very impressive. Following on from wins at the previous three rounds Tim put in another convincing time with a near five second margin over David Hilton for a class winning 100.03 second final run.
Three drivers entered Class P2 at Goodwood with John Biddulph (3.2 Carrera) up against some very stiff competition. With a fastest time of 99.25 John came in third place and was 2.85 seconds behind some exceptionally quick P2 times. Second and first place went to father and son Geraint and Ben Evans in their shared 3.2 Carrera. Geraint was a tenth of a second quicker than Ben in his first timed outing but, in the final run, Ben edged ahead by over a second with a time that equalled Jeff Archer’s P2 class record for Goodwood. Geraint’s fastest time for second place was 97.55 seconds while Ben’s class winning time was a superb 96.40 seconds. Four drivers entered Class P1 at Goodwood with Darren Grapes making his championship debut in a GT3 as well as collecting a trophy for third place. After cutting over three and a half seconds off his first timed run Darren finished the day with a fastest time of 103.35 seconds. It was two supercharged, four-cylinder cars vying for the top spot in P1, however, with Karl Lupton (supercharged 944) earning himself second place trophy with a fastest time of 98.72 seconds while slick-shod Simon Wilson (supercharged 924) put in an impressive time (including 2% penalty for slicks) of 97.58 seconds for a well deserved class win.
